The other goal

Filed under: Banter,Goals and Aspirations — Padrigue @ 7:43 pm

I remembered what the other goal I had was. I want to read 6 or more books a year. Not too big a goal for most, but with my terrible history of reading, one book every two months is a pretty good target to hit. Currently I’m reading Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut. Not his best work for sure, but entertaining to some degree. His writing style is amusing.

Not sure what will be next… A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin? Maybe. Or one of the self help books my brother Jim suggested: The Prophet, The Four Agreements, The Way of the Peaceful Warrior, and No Death, No Fear. We’ll see. I’ve also got to read The Contrarians Guide to Leadership which is a bit of reading I’m doing with work. We (the support center leads) are reading a chapter and chatting about it each week.

Doesn’t quite fit into the goal of reading entire books, but also on the list is to read some short stories written by Casey in years past.

Goals

Filed under: Goals and Aspirations — Padrigue @ 11:42 am

I was feeling all depressed and like I was in a rut the other day. One of those sorta “What am I doing with my life?” things… so I decided to come up with a few goals or “resolutions” perhaps. Anyhow I’m going to put them here for all to see for now.

  1. Get up at 7:00AM every day of the week, right when the alarm goes off.
  2. Sort of a corollary to number 1, go to bed every night at 11:00PM give or take 1/2 hour.
  3. Spend 1 hour every night on a coding project of some sort. Web based or programming. I don’t know what yet, so I need to nail that down before I can get going on it. I may also want to reduce the amount of time on this since evenings are already pretty packed.
  4. Cut alcohol from my diet except for at social occasions. The definition of a social gathering is anything that includes more people than just me, save Casey and/or Isaac.
  5. Travel Alaska. I need at least one serious trip this summer with Casey before she takes off for geology field camp from late June to early August. Currently what I’ve run past Casey is a trip to Kennicott/McCarthy area. Maybe we could XC ski into Hootlenanna hot springs while winter is still in swing.

There may be one other thing, but it’s not coming immediately to mind. I’ll add it later if it exists.

I’ve had this list for the past couple days and have been successful with the getting up thing, the not drinking thing, and pretty good at the going to bed thing. I haven’t come up with a coding project yet, instead we worked on taxes last night. Maybe I’ll take a graphics course…

I’m also going to set up some serious work goals. I want to grab work by the horns and do something instead of just floating down this meandering stream. Time for some direction!

I feel like it is time for some real vision. Both work and personally.

Anyhow, I’ve got to head off to the ice arena to get some skating in! Cheers.

Chillun

Filed under: Banter — Padrigue @ 10:50 pm

So I’m chillin upstairs at home listening to music on newly found songza.com. You can search any song you wanna listen to, and it’ll play it. Oft times with a video. Not sure what all its sources are, but youtube is one of them. You can set up a little playlist with all your favorite music from online. Wicked cool. However it seems to hang while attempting to download the tune pretty often. Big drawback. Until i see that change, I’ll continue using pandora.com quite a bit.

Well, I don’t have much time to post anything that’s useful. Laptop battery is getting low. Plus I haven’t got any photos of Isaac doing hockey. This is taking a lot of the family’s time, so its on my mind a lot. Isaac freakin loves it though. He’s losing his focus on homework and piano though, now that they’re routine. Casey’s doing piano too. She’s doing well, and seems focused on getting better. That’s pretty cool. Shouldn’t be long before I’m sitting at the piano with her, doing duets. Lookin’ forward to it.

Cheers

Hello hello hello, is there anybody in there?

Filed under: Banter — Padrigue @ 12:19 pm

So, it’s been quite some time since a post eh? I’d like to start posting once a week as I’ve been frequently surprised by people saying that they still check my unkempt blog in hopes of an update.

Sitting here at the dining room table with a large warm and grey pussy cat happily purring on my lap, I expect that todays ramblings will serve the purpose of mentioning a couple big things that have happened somewhat recently.

First, of course is that I’m now a married man and loving it.

The ceremony and reception took place this year on one of the few beautiful days of this summer. Saturday, June 14th to be precise. The ceremony itself was short, sweet, and to the point. Everyone conglomerated, we all walked up the aisle, two of Casey’s brothers and Josh Steadman said little pieces, Uncle Lee married us, and we walked back down the aisle.

All right!

All right!

Isaac flew up from Ouzinkie with his mom so he could be the ring-bearer. It was pretty cool.

The reception took place afterward not too far from the Ceremony’s location on Wedgewood grounds by the Bird Observatory and Noyes Slough over in the Wedgewood’s dining facilities. Drinks and light hors d’vours were served while wedding party photos were taken. The wedding party was introduced later, and tasty delectables were available for dinner. Prime rib or chicken picatta were the main entrees. MM MM good!! After that there were toasts, the obligatory dances, the bouquette and garter, and um, DANCING! It was hailed the best wedding EVER! By everyone. I swear! Regardless a good time was had by all.

So now we’re married and we’re happy. I was surprised to find that there is something different. Something better. Yay marriage!

So anyway…

I’ve lost 30 pounds over the last year. I’ve been pretty successful with the online Weight Watchers program. I originally joined just to be supportive of Casey, but it’s turned into a real success for me too!

Isaac is with us for the school year which started mid year last year. It has been working out very well. He’s doing well in school and really seems to be enjoying it. He’s also just starting hockey. Man does this kid love to play hockey. He’s always stoked to be on the ice, and always wants to go back on! But holy cow, I didn’t know kids could sweat so much! When he gets off the ice and takes his helmet off, it’s like he’s been in a shower. I’m not exaggerating!! Its unbelievable. All that time Casey was telling me that we were going to have to wash his stuff after every practice and how much sweat was coming our way didn’t sink in until the first time he took that helmet off after tryouts. Good knight! Piano lessons are starting back up for him this coming Thursday. He seems ready to tackle that also. He’s been a better practicer than I was when I was in lessons. He loves to learn. It’s actually very inspiring and makes my heart swell. Oh God, I am such a freakin’ Dad!

Anyhow, that’ll be the post for today. Maybe next time, I’ll be on the computer that has some hockey photos.

Cheers!

A quick entry with some photos.

1. This is the location on the Denali Highway that I proposed to Casey at. She thought we were simply going for a fun little day trip to see the Denali Highway before it was closed for the winter, but I cleverly had this ring from my great grandmother hidden in the back seat which I showed to her on the banks of this river as I asked her if she would do allow me the honor to be her husband.

2. This is us, somewhat giddy, after the incident and much smootching ;)

Engaged!

Filed under: Banter — Padrigue @ 11:01 am

Howdy all. Just an FYI on my life. Casey and I got engaged a couple weeks ago on September 16th during a Sunday drive down the Denali Highway. Very scenic, and one helluva day! Ring came from my great grandmother Frieda Kellenberger! More later when I can actually get the photos uploaded

Thinking about maybe posting

Filed under: Banter — Padrigue @ 9:19 am

Lets see if anybody notices. Is there any interest out there to see what the house looks like now? Maybe status on Casey, Isaac, and me? I’ll check for comments from time to time to see if there’s interest!!

In the mean time… I posted two things that I had saved, but never posted. Due to irrelevance or incompleteness. Here are the links:

Yo

Filed under: Banter — Padrigue @ 10:21 pm

So I’ve been working on getting a house here in fairbanks for a while, and I’ve been wanting to upload a link so y’all can see it. However since I made an offer that was accepted it’s no longer viewable at the online database. That’s too bad because there were some nice interior photos. This photo I nabbed out of the appraisal document is of the exterior which is not the primary reason I decided to go with this place. Ah well. The reason this place is good is because it’s actually somewhat nice whereas every other place I looked at at this price was total crap… and I mean crap! Plus it has a number of attributes I like. For a place in town its got a lot of land (0.344 acres). Its in town! Running water. Next to the BMW motorcycle shop. Nice but has plenty of room for sweat equity (notice the photo). Neighbors seem promising. Yadda yadda yadda.

The only thing that I really don’t like is the lack of garage. I set out looking only for places with garages. I found one too that was nice but was a condo. I was actually at the realtors about to make an offer when I mentioned that there was this one last place I’d like to look at before I put down this earnest money, and it turned out to be this place. I think owning my own place is better than having a garage… when I’ve got the cash, I can build my own garage anyway! So here’s the pic:

BDay invite to ModZer0-ites

Filed under: Banter — Padrigue @ 2:43 pm

Hello everybody that I know,

This Friday I complete my 28th year of life and turn 28!

To celebrate I’m going to have a bon fire, BBQ, and beer out at my place. Clif Moore has graciously provided a mini keg (5 gallons) of Silver Gulch Coldfoot Pilsner. Feel free to bring whatever you’d like to throw on the grill, your own beverage, gifts ;) , or anything else you’d like to bring. I’ll have some bratwurst cooking until its all consumed. Significant others & children are welcome (mine will both be there!), and you may invite anyone you think would like to join.

If you have access to pallets or know where I can get some for burning let me know because I’m not having much success getting any of my own.

Time: It should start a little after 6pm and will probably start winding down around 10
Date: This Friday, March 31st
Place: My cabin (see attached directions, and those below)

Directions (roughly 13 miles from the university):

  • Drive out the Parks Highway past Gold Hill Tesoro and past the weigh station
  • about a mile or two past the weigh station turn left on Cripple Creek Rd.
  • drive a while (roughly four miles) and notice a ‘pavement ends’ sign
  • turn right on Rosie Creek Trail (1st right after the ‘pavement ends’ sign)
  • There will be a ‘fork’ where your options are a 90 degree left turn or straight ahead, make the 90 degree left
  • Come to a T in the road. this is Kallenburg. turn right
  • down a hill, up a hill, little squiggly
  • Watch for a road to your right named ‘betts bypass’; turn right there. (if you get lost, this betts bypass turn is likely where it will happen, so keep an eagle eye out for the betts bypass sign)
  • go about 100 yards
  • Make a 90 degree right onto ‘Hulme Ct’
  • You can park on the side of Hulme Ct or even up on Betts Bypass
  • there’s a big log cabin & detached garage on the right side of hulme ct, then there’s a red cabin on the right after that. If you’re still driving when you get to the red cabin, i suggest you park and begin walking because the ‘driveway’ to my place is good at getting people stuck. My place is a 2 story barn style cabin with OSB siding… look for the bon fire ;)

Hope to see you there!

-Patrick
